About Winston Salem, North Carolina

A unique blend of history, culture, charm and hospitality is experienced in Winston-Salem, NC. Home to R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Winston-Salem's museums feature everything from Moravian and African-American history to contemporary art. Romantic carriage rides through the cobblestone streets of historic Old Salem presents its own sense of charm.

Well recognized, Old Salem is an appealing well-preserved twenty-block area that honors the heritage of the city's first Moravian settlers. Escaping religious persecution in what is now the Czech and Slovak republics, the first Moravians settled in this rolling area of the Piedmont in the mid-seventeenth century. They soon established trading links with the frontier settlers and founded the town of Salem on a communal basis. The demand for their quality crafts helped establish the adjacent community of Winston. The two merged in 1913 to form Winston-Salem.

Old Salem is one of the most authentic and well documented Colonial sites in America. The living historical museum is in an outdoor town setting. Costumed guides recreate common Salem household activities and trades of the 18th and 19th centuries, focusing especially on the Moravian culture. There are numerous museum shops on the site that are representative of the area.

Accommodations
The Summit Street Bed & Breakfast Inn is an elegant bed and breakfast Inn that has two adjacent Victorian houses and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are nine beautiful guest rooms with Victorian antiques and arts.

The Graylyn International Conference Center, a Norman Revival, is listed on National Register of Historic Places.
The Hawthorne Inn and Conference Center is conveniently located approximately four miles from Smith Reynolds Airport and 20 miles from Piedmont Triad International Airport.

The Hampton Inn Winston-Salem-I-40/Hanes Mall hotel is close to major highways, restaurants, and the largest mall in the southeast, Hanes Mall.

Restaurants
Vincenzo's Italian Restaurant is the oldest and has an excellent extensive menu of authentic gourmet and traditional Italian dishes.

Arigato Japanese Steak & Seafood features appealing Japanese cuisine using fresh chicken, steak, and seafood prepared by a master itamaesan at the diner’s table in a hibachi cooking style.

Copelands of New Orleans is a family dining restaurant serving authentic, gourmet Creole and Cajun cuisine that offers a taste of New Orleans.

Shopping
The largest mall in the Carolina’s is in Winston-Salem. The Hanes Mall, houses a variety of stores that accommodates the desire of most shoppers. Hanes Mall has Over 200 shops, five department stores and a large food court.

Major Attractions
Tanglewood Festival of Lights is the largest and most magnificent drive through the lighting display show in the Southeast. The festival of lights starts in November and lasts for almost two months and features a million lights and over 75 animated displays.

The Stevens Center is a magnificently restored Neoclassical theatre that was originally a 1929 silent movie theatre. It is now the performance space for the North Carolina School of the Arts, where a wide variety of events, concerts, and performances are held.
